AeroPress
The AeroPress is a popular manual coffee maker that uses air pressure to brew a delicious cup of coffee. Here is a step-by-step guide on how we use the AeroPress - we use the inverted method:
Equipment
- AeroPress (regular size) with plunger, chamber, and filter cap
- Paper filter (or a reusable metal filter if preferred)
- Coffee scale (optional)
- Grinder (for fresh beans)
- Kettle
- Timer
Ingredients
- Fresh coffee beans (18g for one cup)
- Filtered water
Steps
1. Invert your AeroPress - meaning take the chamber and the plunger and insert the plunger in the chamber - lining the plunger up with the top of number 4 on the chamber.
2. Put your AeroPress on your scale and measure 18g of ground coffee (regular grind).
3. Put two filters into the AeroPress basket and pour a drop of water on them - this helps hold the filters in the basket.
4. Slowly pour 120g of hot water (212 °F) into the inverted AeroPress (on top of the grinds you put in it)
5. Turn on your timer, insert paddle into coffee, paddle back and forth for 30 seconds slowly. Remove paddle and allow coffee to stand for 30 seconds.
6. Put filter basket and lock into the AeroPress.
7. Give AeroPress and small swish as you flip it over onto your cup.
8. Push out water- takes about 45 seconds - don't over push just come to a slow stop.
9. YAY! You have just made a double espresso!
10. If you want to make a full cup of coffee top off the espresso in your cup with 180g of hot water.
11. Enjoy your smooth cup of hot coffee.
You have just made a great coffee in just over 2 minutes.
Tips
- Experiment with grind size, water temperature, and coffee-to-water ratio to find your preferred flavour.
- If you want a stronger brew, use less water, and for a milder cup, increase the water.
- Warm your cup with hot water before you start (just remember to empty it before you push out your AeroPress).
