Traditional Drip Coffee Maker

Here's a step-by-step guide on how we make coffee in our standard drip coffee maker:

Equipment

  • Drip coffee maker
  • Paper or reusable coffee filter (as required by your machine)
  • Grinder (for fresh coffee beans, if available)
  • Coffee scoop or scale (optional, but recommended for accuracy)

Ingredients

  • Fresh coffee beans (or pre-ground coffee)
  • Filtered water (recommended for best taste)

Steps

1. Prepare the Coffee Grounds

  • If you're using whole beans, grind them to a medium consistency, similar to granulated sugar. Our ground coffee is well suited for the drip machine.
  • For most drip coffee makers, we recommend 55g of coffee to 10 cups (measured from the glass carafe), which is 50 oz of water.  If you find this not strong enough experiment with a ratio of 1 to 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water, but we find this too strong. If you are making 12 cups of coffee we would suggest 65g of coffee.

2. Set Up the Coffee Filter

  • Place a paper or reusable filter in the filter basket of your coffee maker.
  • We use two paper filters - why? It just seems to taste better than one! It creates a very smooth coffee. Experiment yourself to see the difference.

3. Add Coffee Grounds to the Filter

  • Scoop the measured coffee grounds into the filter, spreading them evenly.

4. Add Water to the Reservoir

  • Fill the water reservoir with the desired amount of water, based on your coffee-to-water ratio.
  • Use filtered water if possible, as it improves the coffee’s flavour by reducing any off tastes from tap water.

5. Start the Brew Cycle

  • Turn on the coffee maker and start the brew cycle.
  • Allow the coffee to drip completely before pouring, as the flavour is more balanced once the full pot is brewed.

6. Serve and Enjoy

  • Once brewing is complete, pour yourself a cup. If your coffee maker has a warming plate, the carafe will stay warm for a while.
  • Avoid leaving coffee on the warming plate for too long, as it can develop a burnt taste.

Tips

  • Experiment with coffee-to-water ratios to find your preferred strength.
  • Clean your coffee maker regularly to remove coffee oils and mineral buildup for a better-tasting brew.
  • Use freshly ground coffee whenever possible for the best flavour.
